As the newly-developing manufacutring techniques, 3D printing and laser cutting are widely used in engineering design and prototype manufacturing. In June, the ASME student chapter successfully organized 3D priniting and laser cutting workshops, aiming to introduce the basice concepts and let the students to get hands-on experience and training on using the equipments.
In the 3D printing workshop, Mr. Otto Zhang from the Lab and Facility Office introduced the basic concepts of 3D printing, and gave a presentation about safety precautions when using the 3D printers.
Botao Zhou and Hao Zhang showed how to use Ultimaker Cura software to generate 3D printable slice files from the CAD models, and provided useful tricks to prevent your 3D printing models from crash by properly set the parameters. Students then practiced on their own and used 3D printers in the lab to print their preferred models.
In the laser cutting workshop, Mr. Tianhua Chen from the Lab and Facility Office first emphasized the importance of safety when using the laser cutting. Wearing the safety goggles are required for everyone who is operating the cutting machine.
Mr. Chen then leaded the students to identify key components of a laser cutter located at JI, and introduced its principle and working flow by his demonstration. After the training, students tried to practice and cut their own prototypes under the supervision of Mr. Chen.
