Magnesium-Sulfur batteries with high energy density

The emerging application in electrical vehicles, 5G electric devices, and smart grid has put forward higher requirement and challenges for battery technologies with long life, high energy density, materials sustainability and safety. Mg/S battery is a promising candidate of next generation energy storage system in terms of its high theoretical energy density (1684 Wh kg-1 and 3221 Wh L-1) and much lower raw material price. In our group, we investigate the sulfur cathode, solid-state electrolyte, and Mg metal anode, toward application in solid-state Mg-S batteries. Our research project aims to build a practical Mg/S battery with high energy density and low cost.
